Zweckverband Müllverwertung Schwandorf (ZMS)
The ZMS is a special purpose association currently consisting of 17 Bavarian member districts dedicated to waste recycling and waste disposal and was originally founded in 1979. It uses a central waste-fired power plant located in Schwandorf to utilize residual waste in an ecologically future-oriented and economic way. For this, a system of waste transfer stations was set up to guarantee effective transportation of waste to the central unloading station at the power plant.
In 2011 the energy output of the power plant was equivalent to the energy of 115.000.000 litres of oil. With environmental protection in mind, the power plant itself uses advanced technology such as state of the art smoke filters to meet and even undercut official emission limits.
Furthermore the association cooperates with the FUKS (Forum für Umwelt, Kultur und Soziales – forum for environment, culture and social affairs) and offers educational materials and tours for school classes. With about 100 school classes a year visiting the power plant, the association provides the opportunity for school classes to experience “waste management” and “environmental technology” first-hand. In addition to school-education programmes, the ZMS offers internships, apprenticeships and green jobs.
